WINTER TIPS AND PROCEDURES

With the onset of the winter season, Residents of Litchfield, Northfield, East Litchfield, Milton and Bantam should be reminded of important snow related information.

There is a ban on overnight parking on all Town roads from November 1st through April 30th. Cars parked on Town roads overnight will be towed, especially cars parked during winter storms in such a way to impede plowing and salting. Overnight parking in the Municipal Parking Lot is allowed in the upper Northeast corner of the lot only.

Depositing snow and ice on Town roads from private plowing operations is also prohibited. Snow pushed out into the road can be a dangerous obstruction and can create ice. Please blow or plow your snow along the road, (not across), and to the side where the plows will carry the snow away from your driveway entrance. Please advise the contractors plowing your driveway to do the same.

Residents are further reminded that snow blocking a mailbox will impede efficient mail delivery. Mailboxes should be installed at a height of three and a half to four feet from the road surface to the bottom of the mailbox and set back 6-8 inches from the front face curb or road edge to the mailbox door. Mailboxes installed outside of these guidelines render the boxes susceptible to damage. Temporary plywood shields are encouraged as an effort to reduce the amount of snow coming off of the plows from damaging the mailbox. It is the policy of the Department to use special care and consideration when plowing in their vicinity. Mailboxes damaged by snow WILL NOT be repaired or replaced. Those mailboxes determined to be damaged by snow removal equipment will be repaired and/or replaced if reported within twenty-four hours after the end of the storm AND if they were installed in accordance with U.S. Postal Service regulations. The maximum total amount that the Town will spend for mailbox replacement is $40.00, includes cost of mailbox and post.

Any questions or concerns please contact the Public Works Department at (860) 567-7575.
