VITAL RECORDS
In Connecticut all marriage and death records are open for public inspection. Indexes are available in our office dating back to the 1700’s. Birth records under 100 years old, however, are restricted access records. Indexes in this office date back to the 1700’s and certificates on file begin in 1885.

MARRIAGE & CIVIL UNION CERTIFICATES:
Certified copies of marriage or civil union certificates can be issued to couples who had their ceremony in Litchfield or who lived in Litchfield at the time of the ceremony. Requests may be made in writing by mail or in person during regular office hours. The cost for certified copies is $10.00 each. Social Security numbers will be redacted except when being issued to the parties to the marriage or civil union.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES:
A copy of your birth certificate may be obtained from the Town Clerk’s office in either the town where you were born or where your mother resided at the time of your birth. You must present a valid, government issued photo ID, or two of the documents listed below. The cost for a wallet-sized certified copy is $5.00 and a certified copy of a long form birth certificate is $10.00. The long form is needed for passport application and renewal.

Requests for Birth Certificates may be made in writing by mail or in person during regular office hours. They may be obtained by the person whose birth is recorded on the certificate (must be 18 or older); such person’s parent, (Note: a father has access only if he is recorded on the child’s birth certificate) grandparent or legal guardian; spouse; civil union partner; children (if the child is 18 or older); or grandchildren (if the grandchild is 18 or older).

Requests may also be made by Attorneys and title examiners representing the person or such person’s parent, guardian, child or surviving spouse; persons authorized by court order; agents of a state or federal agency as approved by the Department of Public Health; members of genealogical societies inc. and authorized by the Secretary of the State.

Any eligible party requesting a copy of a birth certificate or permission to examine the original or any copy of a birth record in this office must provide verification of the relationship entitling them to a copy of the birth certificate.
