The office of the Town Clerk is one of the oldest offices in government. Official Town records are filed and maintained in this office in accordance with State Statute and local ordinances. There is a wealth of information available here and all records, with the exception of certain vital records protected by law, are accessible to the public. Our office hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In Litchfield, Connecticut, the Town Clerk is also the Registrar of Vital Statistics and is elected for a term of four years.
Services performed in the Town Clerk's office are many and include:
Receiving and recording of land documents; including survey maps
Recording Birth Records ;Recording Death Records ; Marriage Licenses ; and Civil Unions;Recording veteran service discharges; maintaining burial records and issuing cremation permits; pistol permit applications; landfill and town beach permits and tickets;
Registering voters and providing election materials; Absentee Ballots; maintaining permanent election results & town meeting minutes; Posting agendas, filing minutes of Town boards and commissions; administering oaths of office; recording liquor permits; raffle applications; filing of Town Committee memberships & Campaign Finance records for political parties; Registration of trade names; collecting State & local conveyance taxes; processing Litchfield Notary appointments; appointment of unaffiliated Justices of the Peace; registering, renewing and issuing dog licenses; registering, renewing and issuing sportsmen's licenses , State duck stamps & pheasant tags; publishing legal notices; assisting Genealogists; research & responding to a wide variety of public concerns; collecting, depositing and accounting of Town Clerk fees;
directing and educating the general public to the appropriate department.
