The mission of the Department of Public Works is to enhance the quality of life for the Town of Litchfield residents through the safe, responsive, efficient and effective delivery of services to every neighborhood.
The Department of Public Works provides the residents of Litchfield with a wide range of services for which the demand grows each year due to steady residential and commercial growth. The Director oversees the department with a Highway Supervisor, and Assistant Highway Supervisor, three Foremen and a Vehicle and Equipment Supervisor. The Department has a total of twenty-one employees.
The maintenance and repair of approximately 100 miles of Town-owned roads, storm drains on Town-owned roads and rights-of-way, operation of the transfer station, traffic and street sign maintenance, snow plowing and ice removal, street sweeping and the general maintenance of seven Town-owned buildings (including schools) are the major priorities for which the Department is responsible. Additi0onally the Department provides various support functions to our fellow departments.
The Public Works office staff responds to requests for resident services and related repairs, as well as issuing and collecting fees for driveway and excavation permits, and prepares reimbursements for State grants administered public works projects such as bridges and roadway improvements.
The Department of Public Works is available twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year for all department-related emergencies such as snow-plowing and ice removal, flooding during rainstorms, all road related problems and assistance for the Police and Fire Departments during their emergencies.
The Highway Supervisor also serves as the Town Tree Warden and oversees problems that involve Town-owned trees in addition to supervising the trimming, care and removal of trees throughout Litchfield
